People
Its an old but true cliché - people are your organization's greatest asset. However, the opposite is true as well. The people in your organization must be competent, capable, accountable, and share your core values.
Process
All organizations are made up of multiple processes. These processes can be manual or automated or a hybrid using both. An organization's key processes should be effective, efficient, sustainable, and teachable.
Technology
From a technology perspective, today is a great time to be an entrepreneur. Most major technology companies offer a cloud version of their software for small workgroups. Applications that used to be the sole domain of large companies are now available to small businesses at a fraction of the cost. Automating manual processes through technology helps to level the playing field and open up new markets not previously accessable.
Metrics
Another cliché - What gets measured gets done. Most organizations review their financial performance from time to time. However, to drive improvements in your business it is important to identify your Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and review at least weekly with leadership and front line employees.
Progress
An organization can have the best people, process, technology, and metrics and still struggle because it does not integrate these capabilities through an effective meeting structure. Effective progress meetings include leadership and front line employees who review the metrics and create action items to resolve problems including tweaking processes and technology as necessary.
